The Aroostook Band of the Micmacs established the Micmac Farms in the Caribou/Presque Isle area of Aroostook County as part of a community health project. A large community garden with various fruit trees was established with the goal of becoming a resource of healthy local produce for the tribal members. The fresh quality food provided by the garden introduces healthier eating habits and sustainable farming practices. The farm acres are filled with potatoes, corn, peas, beans, squash, and pumpkins. A greenhouse produces tomatoes, peppers, and herbs, with plans to expand. An herb and berry wheel garden have also created several value added products such as jams and jellies. Other preserved products in their farm store include salted onions, pickles, and dilly fiddleheads. 15,000 pounds of trout are produced per year in the fish hatchery. Micmac Farms embodies the deep sense of respect for the natural environment that has always been embraced by the Micmac people.
