This program places 21 VISTA members and 7 Summer Associates at 16 sites throughout Indian Country to work in two key areas: Healthy Food Access, and Economic Development in Food and Agriculture. At the local level, they assist Tribes in promoting food sovereignty and stronger economic development through food and agriculture. Through tribal food sovereignty assessments, the VISTAs create teams of community members to develop projects that will improve food systems and access to traditional foods with an emphasis on improving health outcomes through a variety of methods including cooking and nutrition curriculum. VISTAs have worked with their communities to create community gardens, start farmer's markets, teach cooking classes, develop breastfeeding policies, partner with local vendors to provide accessible and affordable traditional foods, and much more.
