The Tohono O’odham Community Action (TOCA) organization has been in existence for more than 20 years and has always been community driven, focusing on re-establishing the traditional food system and cultural revitalization of the Tohono O’odham people. TOCA manages more than 100 acres in of traditional foods within Tohono O'odham Nation and engages the community through education and outreach about traditional food and culture. The TOCA organization has also opened a Desert Rain Café in Ajo, Arizona. In addition to managing the community farm in Cowlic, Arizona, this organization teaches an innovative approach to farming by educating the community about producing foods through traditional Ak-Chin flood base farming and irrigation methods that rely strictly on collecting and storing rain water from nearby streams from the mountain ranges and using it to produce traditional food. With high rates of diabetes within the community, TOCA’s goal is to create a healthy, sustainable, and cultural vital community.
